Leo Bodnar LBE-1420 GPSDO
Purchasing the Leo Bodnar LBE-1420 from Batronix is an absolute 'gamechanger' for anyone seriously involved in RF measurement technology. While spectrum analyzers like the Rigol DSA815-TG are fantastic instruments, their internal oscillator (the clock that determines how accurately frequencies are measured) is sensitive to temperature fluctuations and aging. The Leo Bodnar solves this problem instantly, bringing laboratory precision right to your own workbench. What makes the LBE-1420 so special? The LBE-1420 is a GPSDO (GPS Disciplined Oscillator). This means the device receives signals from GPS satellites. Because these satellites are equipped with incredibly expensive and highly precise atomic clocks, the Leo Bodnar uses this signal to continuously adjust ('discipline') its own internal clock. The result is a reference frequency that is extremely stable and crystal clear, without ever drifting. What is possible with this device? 1. Upgrading your Spectrum Analyzer to absolute precision On the back of the Rigol DSA815-TG, there is a BNC connection for a '10 MHz Reference In'. By setting the Leo Bodnar to exactly 10 MHz and connecting it to this port, the Rigol takes over this perfect clock. From that moment on, the frequency axis on the analyzer's screen is 100% reliable. If the analyzer now indicates that a signal is at 27.555000 MHz, it truly is. 2. Aligning and modifying transceivers When repairing or tweaking transmitting equipment, frequency accuracy is essential. With this setup, you can: Check the exact transmission frequency of a transceiver and perfectly adjust the radio's internal crystal oscillators on frequency. Bring modulation bandwidth (AM/FM/SSB) and deviations into view with extreme precision. This is ideal for aligning a wide range of equipment, whether you are working on the modulation and AMC circuit of a 27MHz CB radio, or checking the transmission spectrum of a more advanced HF transceiver for harmonics and spurious emissions. 3. Calibration of other lab measurement equipment. The Leo Bodnar is not only useful for the spectrum analyzer but serves as a universal 'master clock'. For example, if you have a standalone frequency counter , you can connect the 10 MHz output of the Leo Bodnar directly to the counter's input. You know for a fact that the output of the LBE-1420 is perfectly 10.000000 MHz. Then, you only need to adjust the internal trimmer of the frequency counter until the display shows exactly 10 MHz, after which that measuring instrument is also perfectly calibrated. 4. Filter and Antenna design When using the Rigol analyzer in combination with its Tracking Generator (TG), the stable foundation of the Leo Bodnar ensures that sweeping measurements run very tightly. This is particularly useful when designing and measuring RF circuits with narrow margins, such as LC circuits for Fuchs antennas, 1:49 impedance transformers for EFHW antennas, or measuring the attenuation on custom-wound common-mode chokes. Conclusion The Leo Bodnar LBE-1420 is a compact, affordable, and essential instrument for RF measurements. It transforms a good spectrum analyzer into an instrument of metrological precision. For aligning, calibrating, and modifying transceivers and measurement equipment, this is one of the best investments you can make for your test setup.
